Brunei Ugadi Celebration 2013

"The Telugu community in Brunei under the auspices of the Indian Association of Belait celebrated the Telugu New Year Ugadi recently at the Royal Berkshire Hall of the Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club in Jerudong with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm." 


"The cultural programme of the Ugadi celebration began with some classical singing, followed by children’s traditional Telugu dances, Kolattam and cinematic dances, and ended with the performance of a patriotic song.A gathering of 350 people from different walks of life attended the recent celebration."
"In connection with the Ugadi celebration 2013, an essay-writing session in the Telugu language was also organised two weeks before the celebration at the Indian Association of Belait, which was attended by many students and family members." - Excerpts from The Borneo Bulletin

Ugadi Celebrations (2013) at Birmingham Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple

"Vibrant and colourful are the two words that summarise the beauty of the celebration of Ugadi ,Telugu New Year,by the UK Telugu Association. The Community hall of Balaji Temple of Birmingham was full to its capacity to witness the extraordinary performances of the artists who were, most of them, professionals in their respective fields. Every Year UKTA celebrates Ugadi in the same venue but with a fresh vigour. This year also, to welcome ‘Vijaya nama samvatsram,’ UKTA,in its own unique style, shortlisted the best of all those who wanted to perform, and presented a high-class  cultural programme."

Ugadi Pachchadi Recipe

"YUGAADI Pachchadi is the food highlight of the day for Telugus celebrating Yugaadi (Telugu New Year).Made with ingredients like new brown sugar (jaggery), mango, neem flowers, tamarind, salt and chilli, the dish is a sweet-tangy-bitter salad.This dish requires no cooking, just preparation of the ingredients which are then tossed together to create a mix of flavours teasing the taste buds with sweet, sour, spicy, bitter, salty and savoury tastes." 


"According to former Telugu Association of Malaysia past vice-president Nebarthy Ledchumanan, eating the pachchadi is important as it has an inner meaning. The pachchadi is synonymous with the celebration. It has six different ingredients lending six flavours. It symbolises that man should face all aspects of life – that he should embrace all the joys and sadness, trials and tribulations, that life affords, he explained."

Ingredients: 

Young mango chopped into fine cubes
Neem flowers (if not available, neem leaves can be used)
Fresh tamarind juice
Salt to taste
Fresh chilli, sliced
Brown sugar to taste
Method: 

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and toss to enable flavours to mix.

Happy Ugadi Celebration 2013 -The Malay Mail

TODAY, 500,000 Telugus in Malaysia and 77 million around the globe celebrate the Telugu new year Ugadhi. Since we are promoting 1Malaysia, I feel it will be good for Malaysians to know about each other's cultures.

Ugadhi, as the name Yug-Adi suggests, is celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Telugu year. This day is celebrated as new year's day by the Telugus.

The most prevailing aspect of the Ugadhi celebration is preparing Ugadhi Pacchadi comprising six tastes — jaggery (sweet), salt (salty), neem flowers (bitter), tamarind (sour), raw mango pieces (astringent) and chili powder (pungent). Food that has all these six tastes has most of the nutrition needed by human body.

On Ugadhi day, people wake up at about 5am and have a bath.

Being the new year, it demands kith and kin to wear new clothes. They pray for their health, wealth and prosperity. Ugadhi is also the most auspicious time to start new ventures.

The women of the house will prepare Ugadi Pacchadi (Ugadhi Sammelan) and distribute it to all members of the family.

It is customary to go to the temple in the evening where the pandit recites the Panchanga Sravanam. The yearly forecast for the country as a whole and for the people, based on Raasis, will be predicted.

During the celebrations, every Telugu should take a vow to rethink their actions and conduct in life. Let us use the Ugadhi celebration as a stepping stone to discard individualism and keep working for the benefit and advancement of society.
